Austin, Texas

You know you’re hearing the liberal beat in the heart of a conservative state when you consider that this city’s rallying cry is “Keep Austin Weird.” Equal parts college campus, state capital, high-tech boom town, and possibly the live music center of the universe, Austin dishes up all manner of world cuisine. But face it: you’re in the middle of Texas. Eat the barbecue (with sauce on the side if you know what’s good for you) or revel in a regional food fusion that makes expats as nostalgic about Austin’s Tex-Mex as a certain Frenchman was about madeleines. Walk it off with a stroll over Congress Avenue Bridge, where the country’s largest bat colony takes flight at dusk—or up Sixth Street, where the club scene rocks the night.

About me: I grew up in Texas and still live in Austin where my culinary influences range from cheap taco stand fare to exotic sushi to perfectly fried chicken and biscuts. A perfect evening…

Garlic Chicken

Reviewed on Nov. 18, 2008 by sarahjane85
Recipe simplicity gets 5+ stars. It is by far the easiest meal I've ever had to prepare. The moist chicken on the inside was super tasty and not too garlick-y. I normally 'bread' chicken breasts in typical flour or cornbread and egg batter. This was a healthier change and still satisfied my crunch.

Kickin' London Broil with Bleu Cheese Butter

Reviewed on Nov. 18, 2008 by Michi-Chan
I have never cooked a London broil before, so I was a little hesitant about overcooking it. I followed the directions exactly as written and the meat turned out fantastic. I had to increase the rub recipe a bit and added a smidgen more cayenne, but other than that everything stayed the same. My husband, my guest and I enjoyed it so much that we managed to consume the entire 3 lbs I prepared and were still craving more. My only warning is, the blue cheese can be a bit overpowering, be careful that you don't go over the recommended amount in the recipe. All in all a wonderful, simple, quick, and delicious recipe everyone should try. Kudos to the chef!

Sour Cream and Chive Rolls

Reviewed on Nov. 17, 2008 by Jeff
If I could give a slightly more detailed rating, I would give this a 5 minus. These were definately better than "pretty good" (which is my 4 star rating) but I have a couple small comments for improvement. First, I did not expect them to be so dinky... timy little rolls - sort of a "tasty treat" size. And secondly, they were soft throughout - like a dense, really good hot dog bun. I am new to bread making (my first try) so I do not know what would give the consistency I expected but just wished these had more of a crust or at least a distinction from outer to inner. As it never claimed this I would not mark it down - just an observation. Taste was great. The overall texture I enjoyed too. Still trying to get my brain around the return on my time investment tho... But I am willing to keep plugging away at that concept though after making these.
